Anatomy of the Cranio-Sacral System
Introduction:
The CCST Professional Training in Cranio-Sacral Integration is a very practical course, with a balance of approximately two-thirds practical to one-third theory. The course consists of a combination of lectures, PowerPoint presentations, guided practical sessions, discussions, visualisations, working in smaller groups and, above all, practical work - in which the students work together and with the tutors, in pairs or in small groups, encountering and gaining experience of many different Cranio-Sacral systems.
Information is presented in many different formats to suit different learning styles. We aim to support you in your learning and development in every way we can.

We recognise and appreciate neurodiversity and we aim to respond to and cater for the individual needs of all participants, as well as providing deeper understanding of neurodiversity and how to respond to individual needs in professional practice.
Trauma Informed Practice:
Addressing and resolving trauma is one of the principal priorities of Cranio-Sacral Integration.
The college is deeply committed to Trauma Informed Practice, understanding the many ways in which trauma can arise, responding to trauma appropriately, appreciating the value of trauma release and resolution, and providing the resources and grounding to enable safety, security and support in working with each individual’s process.
Tutors, Tutor Support, and Tutorials:
The tutors work with every student during the course, circulating so that each student has the opportunity to work with different tutors at various times, gaining a range of different experiences and individual feedback.
There is a tutor support system, through which students can keep in touch with tutors throughout the course, in order to provide support and assistance. Each student is allocated (or may choose) a specific tutor who will contact the student from time to time between the stages of the course to check that everything is progressing smoothly and to maintain personal contact. Students are also welcome to contact their tutor (or any of the tutors) at any time to discuss any queries or difficulties relating to the course. Please bear in mind that the tutor support system is for support, not simply to be used for additional training. For more substantial questions, a private tutorial can be arranged.
Private tutorials, individually or in small groups, can also be arranged with the tutors as required. Please contact the college for details of tutor availability.
Contact details for the tutors can be found on the Study Group schedule which is sent out to all students at the start of each term.
Study groups:
Online Study Groups:
There are regular Online Study Groups with the tutors throughout the course, approximately once a week, from 7:00 PM to 8:00 PM, usually on a Wednesday, covering a wide range of themes. Cost £15.
Live in-person Study Groups:
There are also Live In-Person Study Groups at the Centre for Cranio-Sacral Therapy in Primrose Hill, London NW1, approximately once a month, from 7:30 PM to 9:00 PM, usually on a Wednesday or Thursday. Cost £25.
These live study groups provide a valuable opportunity for practical practice with fellow students, under the guidance of a tutor. Each live study group will have a specific theme and will be led by a tutor, with an emphasis on practical practice.
For the live study groups, there is a maximum of 12 participants.
A schedule of all study groups (online and live) will be sent to all students at the start of each term.
A reminder and an invitation to book will be sent out each week.
Please note that payment for study groups needs to be paid to the clinic account (not the usual college account). Details of the clinic account will be included in each weekly study group reminder. This account is only for study groups.
Students are also encouraged to form local units for study and practice.
Home Study:
In order to help students with their studies and progress, home study is assigned at each part of the course to be returned at the following session. The purpose of the home study is to support your learning, and we hope that you will be keen to make the most of this opportunity to enhance your development as a cranio-sacral therapist. In order to enhance your learning, the home study needs to be completed stage by stage as you progress through the course.
The number of hours of home study required will vary according to previous experience, but all students can expect to set aside some time each week for home study and reading.
We hope that you will be enthusiastic to explore and develop your study and understanding of Cranio-Sacral Integration, in order to enhance your progress and development on this exciting journey of transformation.
Practical Practice:
Practical practice is essential in order to progress and develop as a Cranio-Sacral Therapist. The more you practise the quicker you will progress
The most productive way to practise is with other students from your course, and the majority of your practice should be with fellow students wherever possible. If there are no students from your course living nearby, you can contact the College and ask for details of students from our other courses or recent graduates with whom you can make contact. You can also practise on willing friends and relatives - as long as they are fundamentally healthy. It is not advisable to practise on anyone with a significant health issue.
The basic requirement is to practise at least three times a week. You will also need to keep a record of your practice sessions on your online Practice Record, including insights gained from each session. You will receive a link to your personal online Practice Record document soon after starting your training.
Books:
The set books for the course are:
"Cranio-Sacral Integration – Foundation – 2nd Edition" by Thomas Attlee.
- this book forms the main basis for study and reading, and all students will need a copy.
"Face to Face with the Face" by Thomas Attlee
- this book is required for the second half of the training, and all students will need a copy.
Both books can be obtained from the college at a discount. You can buy the books at the college on the first day of the course and during the course at the discounted price of £35 (list price £45).
No other specific set books are required at this stage, but further background reading is encouraged. A booklist of further recommended reading is provided.
Online platform:
The college provides an online platform, containing much of the course material, and additional resources, including PowerPoint presentations, videos, etc. This enables you to revise the course content in your own time at your own pace, as well as exploring the new material provided by the videos and other resources.
Each student group will have access to the relevant parts of the online platform as they progress through the training. The link for your particular student group will be sent to you early in the training.
Project:
During the second half of the course, a Reflective Practice Project needs to be completed. This is a very valuable process, which will greatly enhance your potential as a therapist, as well as providing a much deeper awareness and understanding of yourself. It is not a daunting academic process, but a powerful exercise in self-reflection.
Details will be provided at the halfway stage of the training, so that projects can be completed by May 31st.
Attendance and Missed Days:
Attendance:
In order to ensure that all students gain the most out of the course and receive a thorough and complete training, full attendance of the whole course is essential in order to graduate. In any one year, a minimum attendance of 80 per cent is required.
Missed Days:
Any missed days will need to be made up through tutorials (at a cost), and by attending the equivalent day at the next opportunity (free of charge assuming course fees have been paid) in order to bring the final attendance up to 100 per cent.
If you miss any days of the training, you will need to make them up by completing the following two requirements (both a and b):
- Arranging a tutorial, to cover the material briefly before the next course weekend (at an extra cost).
- Attending the equivalent days at the next opportunity (free of charge, assuming you've paid your course fees) in order to gain the full experience of the days that you have missed (because a tutorial can never convey the full experience).
Deferral:
Occasionally, students may wish to defer their training due to personal circumstances. You are welcome to defer the course and resume at a later date, if necessary.
If a student defers the course part-way through and returns at a later date, revision of certain parts of the course may be required (at a reduced revision cost), in order to ensure that the student is up to speed and well prepared to resume the subsequent stages of the training.
Time keeping:
Please arrive around 9.00 am each day. The course teaching day on the Cranio-Sacral training runs from 9.30 am to 5.30 pm each day. It is essential to arrive on time. In order to give and receive Cranio-Sacral Therapy most effectively, it is necessary to be well settled and grounded so that you can be at your most sensitive and receptive, for your own benefit and for the benefit of fellow students who you will be working with. So it is essential to arrive at around 9.00 am each day in order to have time to settle yourself before the start of the teaching day. This will enable you to gain maximum benefit from the course. As well as settling yourself, this time can also be spent exploring the books and anatomical models at the college and also interacting with your fellow students and the tutors, which is also beneficial.
Assessment and feedback:
Assessment and feedback are provided continuously throughout the course, particularly through regular practical interaction with the tutors, and also through the home study. This enables the tutors to help you in understanding how you are getting on, and to help you to progress as smoothly and effectively as possible.
Our aim in providing feedback is to support you in becoming a capable and confident cranio-sacral therapist. Feedback is provided in a supportive and encouraging manner. The majority of students respond positively to feedback and progress smoothly through the training. If a student is not responding to feedback, and consequently not progressing through the training, additional requirements may be necessary.
This assessment is particularly significant at the halfway stage of the course since, for their own benefit and progress, it is essential that students have obtained a certain level of experience, sensitivity, and proficiency before progressing to the delicate and sensitive areas involved in the later stages of the course - such as the treatment of babies, or the face. At this point in particular, some students may be required to attend extra tutorials, or to extend their training over a longer period, or to gain further practice, treatment, and experience before proceeding to the rest of the course, or before starting teaching clinics - in which students will be working on members of the public.
In any event, some students may wish to allow themselves more time to complete their studies, and students are encouraged to proceed at their own pace, developing their sensitivity in their own time, rather than rushing to complete the course or rushing into the exams. Students with insufficient experience as professional therapists may be required to gain further practice and clinical experience before taking the exams or starting teaching clinics.
The college is committed to providing safe, robust training that prepares students to practise cranio-sacral therapy in a grounded, stable, and well-regulated way, in order to ensure the safety and well-being of clients. Safe practice is essential. This includes establishing balanced practitioner fulcrums, a calm quiet non-reactive presence, clear boundaries, self-awareness, and the ability to manage your own personal process as a practitioner. These qualities form the foundation of effective cranial-sacral work. In order to gain the most out of this training, it is essential to proceed at an appropriate pace in accordance with your personal development, rather than rushing the process. In some cases, students who are not fulfilling these requirements, or not progressing at an appropriate pace, may be asked to extend or defer their training, in order to enable sufficient time for the student to develop the necessary qualities, and to establish sufficient levels of skills and stability, in order to optimise the potential for safety of clients, and to help the student to become a truly effective and successful cranio-sacral therapist.
Revision:
Revision of certain parts of the course may be possible, depending on student numbers and other circumstances.
If a student has deferred their training, revision of certain parts of the course may be required before resuming.
The cost for revision is currently £70 per day.
Revision of more substantial portions of the training will be subject to an agreed fee.
Exams:
CCST aims to provide the best training in the world, with exceptionally high standards. Exams are very helpful in promoting high standards. Exams also serve a very valuable purpose in raising the level of skills and knowledge in every student, thereby enabling students to become far more effective and successful cranio-sacral therapists. Each year, it is very evident that in the lead up to exams, students practise and study far more assiduously and thereby enhance their skills and their potential for building a successful professional practice.
Our aim is to ensure that every student is thoroughly prepared for the exams, with extensive exam preparation, feedback and support.
We aim to make the exams as user friendly as possible, while still supporting high standards.
Our exams are not academically demanding. We cater for all specific learning approaches, so dyslexia and other neurodiversity issues need not be a concern. We recognise that exam phobia is a common phenomenon and we make allowances for this. Appropriate cranio-sacral treatment can be very helpful in addressing this.
Regular enjoyable interactive quizzes during the training provide a clear idea of what to expect in the exams.
The final exams consist of a written exam (online) and a practical exam, in June/July each year.
Dates for the exams for each year can be seen on the website.
The written exam takes place on a specific date at a specific time.
The practical exams take place over three days, with each student only needing to attend one of those three days.
Exams can be deferred until the student feels ready. We encourage students to progress at their own pace, rather than putting themselves under pressure to complete by a certain date. Some students may be advised to defer their exams, in the interest of enhancing their skills and enabling them to become more effective and successful cranio-sacral therapists. Further opportunities to take the exams will be available at various times during the year.
Anatomy, Physiology and Pathology:
A firm foundation in Anatomy, Physiology and Pathology is essential for all practising Cranio-Sacral Therapists. Students with insufficient previous background in Anatomy, Physiology, and Pathology will need to attend the CCST online course in Anatomy, Physiology and Pathology (or a suitable equivalent) either before or concurrent with the CCST training.
The CCST online course in Anatomy, Physiology and Pathology can be started at any time and completed in your own time. It needs to be completed before graduating (but does not have to be completed before starting the course). It is highly recommended to complete the APP course sooner rather than later, as this will enhance your understanding of the training, and reduce time-pressure during the latter stages of the course. Anatomy of the Cranio-Sacral System:
We also run two online weekends each year specifically covering the Anatomy of the Cranio-Sacral System. These weekends are separate from the APP course. Whereas the APP course provides a suitable foundation for practising any therapy, these weekends on the Anatomy of the Cranio-Sacral System provide anatomy specifically relevant to Cranio-Sacral Therapy.
Attendance of these weekends is optional but highly recommended for most students, since the anatomy of the Cranio-Sacral System is not usually covered in any detail in most standard APP courses. They are presented in a very interactive and enjoyable manner.
These courses consist of two online weekends in September/October each year. Students who attend them invariably report that they have found them to be invaluable preparation for the main training. The first weekend covers material relevant to the first half of the course, the second weekend covers material relevant to the second half of the course.
Teaching Clinics:
Teaching Clinics are an integral part of the CCST professional training. Teaching Clinics are greatly appreciated by students as one of the most valuable aspects of the training, providing essential clinical experience which in turn enables the competence and confidence to go out into professional practice on your own.
Teaching Clinics are open to students during the second half of their training, and also open to graduates. They provide an opportunity to observe and participate in Cranio-Sacral treatment in a clinical setting with an experienced Cranio-Sacral Therapist, treating members of the public (at reduced cost). The Teaching Clinic is an integral part of the training and students are required to attend a minimum number of days before graduating. Teaching Clinic days are in addition to the course teaching days.
The current teaching clinic requirement is a minimum of sixteen half days (or eight whole days) in order to graduate. This will consist of twelve half-days of Multi-hand Teaching Clinic sessions (MTCs) - led by a tutor with a small group of three students, followed by four half days of Individual Teaching Clinic sessions (ITCs) - in which you take individual responsibility for the patient. All teaching clinics are under the supervision of a tutor.
You will start your teaching clinics immediately after the halfway stage of your training. Booking details for teaching clinics will be sent to you shortly before then. Each month you will be able to choose from a selection of dates.
Students travelling from a distance:
For those travelling from a distance, teaching clinics can be booked to coincide with your course attendance during the days immediately following course modules, in order to minimise travel. For students on the One Year training, the optimum arrangement is to book 4 of your 16 required sessions after each of modules C, D, E, and F. Since the days after each module are generally in great demand, and since the allocations need to be shared evenly among all students travelling from a distance, students will generally need to spread their four teaching clinic sessions over three or four days after each module.
Teaching Clinics take place on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and Mondays. Students need to attend from 8:30am-1:00pm for the morning session, 1:30pm-6:00pm for the afternoon session. You can book half days or whole days. Half days are recommended initially. Since you will be treating members of the public in a professional setting, punctuality is absolutely essential. Please be sure to arrive by 8:30am for morning sessions, and by 1:30pm for afternoon sessions.
Individual Teaching Clinics (ITCs), which you will attend during the latter part of your training, take place on Saturday afternoons and Sunday afternoons only.
Teaching clinics currently take place primarily at the Centre for Cranio-Sacral Therapy, Primrose Hill (PH), London NW1 8XE, and also at the British College of Osteopathic Medicine (BCOM), 6 Netherhall Gardens, London NW3 5RR.
The cost of your 16 required teaching clinics Is included in your course fees. Any extra teaching clinics, missed teaching clinics, or late cancellations will need to be paid for.
You need to complete at least six of your required professional treatments before starting your teaching clinics.
Treatment:
Receiving professional Cranio-Sacral treatment during your training is essential – both as part of the learning process, and as part of your own process of healing, clearing your system, and personal development.
In order to heal others, you need to heal yourself.
The most significant factor in becoming an effective and successful cranio-sacral therapist is your own therapeutic presence, which in turn means establishing clarity, stability, and safety within your own system - which in turn means genuinely engaging with and addressing your owner personal process, and your own underlying trauma.
Receiving high quality Cranio-Sacral treatment for yourself is one the most valuable ways of developing your therapeutic presence and your potential as a therapist, enabling you to work most effectively as a Cranio-Sacral Therapist.
Regular treatment throughout the training is also essential to help in maintaining balance, stability, and growth as your personal process evolves in response to the training.
Course Requirement:
Students are required to receive a minimum of 10 sessions during their training before graduating, and a minimum of 6 sessions before the half-way stage of the course (when you will be starting to treat patients in the Teaching Clinic).
It is also essential to start your treatments as soon as possible, in order to gain the most benefit for yourself and from the training.
Learning Process:
In order to enhance the learning process, these sessions need to be from at least 3 different Cranio-Sacral Therapists (in order to experience a range of different approaches). These treatments may be arranged with any qualified Cranio-Sacral Therapist approved by the College. This may include past graduates of the College, tutors at the College, or others, subject to approval.
Since part of the purpose of the treatments is to enhance the student’s understanding of our particular approach of Integrated Biodynamic Cranio-Sacral Therapy (IBCST), treatment with graduates or tutors from this college are likely be particularly valuable. The majority of your required professional treatment sessions therefore need to be from CCST graduates. Treatment from tutors at the college is particularly beneficial, as you can be confident that they are very capable therapists, and that their approach will correspond with your training. However, students should at no time feel obliged for any reason to undergo treatment from a tutor or to receive treatment from any particular tutor.
You are of course welcome to receive as many additional treatments as you wish from other therapists.
Personal process:
It is essential to receive treatment from several different therapists in order to learn from different approaches (even if you think that your current therapist is the best in the world!). However, in order to deepen your personal treatment process, you will probably want to settle into longer term regular treatment with one therapist (at least for a while). The stipulated ten sessions is only a minimum requirement. Most students will receive many more treatments, as part of their ongoing process of personal growth and development.
High quality treatment for your own benefit:
In arranging cranio-sacral treatment for yourself, the priority is to ensure that you gain most benefit from your treatments, both in terms of your personal process and your training (rather than simply ticking a box). It is essential to arrange treatment that genuinely engages with your own personal process, with therapists who can help you to reach more profound therapeutic levels (rather than simply arranging treatment with the most convenient local therapist). In order to heal others, you need to heal yourself.
Treatment Record:
Students will be provided with an online Treatment Record and all professional treatments received (not practice sessions) need to be entered on this treatment record, including insights gained from the treatment sessions.
Personal Development:
The course is intended to be an enjoyable and enlightening experience, not only providing a thorough professional training in this profoundly effective therapy, but also involving a substantial degree of personal development - as a practitioner and as a caring and sensitive individual. Students often report that this training has transformed their life in every way - professionally and personally, their day-to-day life, their family relationships, their responses to the world around them, their very nature.
The way in which this development manifests will vary for each person according to his or her situation. Students will learn to appreciate the therapeutic processes involved in such development, as the most significant factor in enabling them to become effective and successful cranio-sacral therapists, and to respond appropriately to these processes in themselves, in each other, and in patients.
Appropriate support is provided in so far as possible within the context of the course. However, students should also arrange their own therapeutic back-up so that they are sufficiently supported through the various therapeutic processes that may arise in the course of this personal development.
If at any stage during your time as a student with the college, you experience difficulties of any kind, you are always welcome to discuss the matter with your tutor, with another tutor, or with the college management committee. We will always do whatever we can to support you and to resolve any difficulties.
Graduation requirements:
The following is a summary of Graduation Requirements:
1. Successful completion of the final Practical Exam.
2. Successful completion of the final Written Exam.
3. Satisfactory attendance and participation at the required number of Teaching Clinics.
4. Completion of the required number of Cranio-Sacral Treatments.
5. Completion of a Reflective Practice Project during the second half of the course.
6. Completion of all Home Study assignments and Practical Practice requirements.
7. Completion of an appropriate Anatomy, Physiology, and Pathology course.
8. Full attendance at the course.
9. Full payment of all course fees and monies due.
10. Practitionership - a suitably responsible, ethical and professional approach to being a practitioner, and dedication to one’s own personal process of development as a practitioner.
Graduation:
On completion of the training, there are exams (both written and practical) successful completion of which entitles graduates to a Diploma in Cranio-Sacral Therapy.
After graduation, you will be eligible to join the professional association for cranio-sacral therapists and become a registered cranio-sacral therapist. You will then be included on the relevant registers of qualified practitioners, which are widely available.
After graduation, you will also be eligible to join the International Affiliation of Integrated Biodynamic Cranio-Sacral Therapists (IAIBCST), which provides an international register of IBCST therapists. Once you are registered, you will be entitled to use the letters IBCST (Integrated Biodynamic Cranio-Sacral Therapist) after your name.

Venues:
We use different venues for different courses. We aim to maintain continuity of venues for each training in so far as possible, e.g. for the One Year training or for the Two Year training. This may occasionally change from time to time.
Fees:
Full details of the fees are clearly displayed on our website. Fees can be paid in full at the start of the course, or through a monthly payment plan (Standing Order). There is a discount for full payment of the course fees in advance. All fees are non-refundable.
Total Cost of the Course for courses starting in 2026 (including exams and teaching clinics): £7,000-£7,520 depending on payment method:
- Full payment in advance by Bank Transfer: £7,000
- Monthly standing order (One Year Course) 12 payments of £610 per month, total: £7,320
- Monthly standing order (Two Year Course) 20 payments of £366 per month, total: £7,320
- Payment Stage by Stage: £7,520
There will be additional costs - such as books, study groups, tutorials, treatments - which will vary from person to person, for which approximately £1,000 should be allowed.
Financial management is an integral and necessary part of being a professional therapist, and your ability to manage your financial payments responsibly will be assessed throughout the course in relation to punctual payment of course fees and any other payments due, such as teaching clinics and study groups.
Feedback, concerns, dissatisfactions:
The College of Cranio-Sacral Therapy aims to provide the highest possible standard of training in Cranio-Sacral Integration and we are constantly seeking to improve the service that we provide in every possible way. To this end, we welcome feedback and we are always happy to hear your views on all matters related to the training and its presentation.
We will be asking for written feedback at various times during the training, inviting comprehensive assessment of the course, the tutors, the teaching, the facilities, Teaching Clinics, Study Groups and other relevant matters.
As well as these written feedback forms, we hope that you will feel free, within the friendly atmosphere of the course, to discuss with the tutors any matters of concern that may arise during the day to day progress of the course.
If at any time you have specific concerns you wish to raise, whether major or minor, there are various ways in which you can do this:
- You can talk to one of the tutors, who are readily available throughout the course.
- Each student is allocated a personal tutor, who will contact you between stages of the course to enquire about your progress and wellbeing. You can raise any concerns at that time, or contact your personal tutor at any time. You are also welcome to contact any of the other tutors if you wish.
- There are also opportunities during the various question times throughout the course.
- As well as being available during course times, the tutors are also available to be contacted between stages of the course.
- If you feel that your concerns cannot, or are not, being addressed sufficiently by the above means, or if the concerns are persisting, or if for any reason you do not wish to raise your concerns with a tutor on your course who is teaching you, or if you wish to make a formal complaint, then please address your concerns in writing to the college management committee at info@ccst.co.uk or by post to CCST, 9 St. George’s Mews, London, NW1 8XE.
We aim to maintain a close personal interaction with all of our students. We trust that you will feel free to express any concerns readily within the context of the friendly supportive atmosphere of the training. We hope that any concerns will be addressed to your satisfaction in so far as possible, and we look forward to receiving your feedback so that we can continue to improve our training to the highest possible standard.
Advertising and professional practice :
Students are not permitted to practise professionally until fully qualified. No student is permitted to charge for Cranio-Sacral treatment, or for practice sessions as a student therapist. No student is permitted to advertise themselves as a Cranio-Sacral Therapist until they are fully qualified by successfully completing the CCST exams and graduating in Cranio-Sacral Therapy.
Photography and Filming:
Students are not permitted to take photographs or videos during the training. From time to time, photography and filming by the college may take place during the course, for the purposes of providing course material for student support, and for social media and promotion. In signing the Student Agreement, you agree to be included. If you don't wish to be included, you can inform the college.
Contact details :
In order to enable practice and interaction with other CCST students, contact details (name, e-mail address, phone number, and approximate location) for students on your course and details of other students living in your area will be distributed to current students at the college. In signing the Student Agreement, you give permission for your contact details to be distributed to other current students and tutors. Contact details will not be given to anyone who is not currently at the college without your permission. If you don’t wish to be included, you can inform the college.
Administrative matters:
Matters pertaining to administrative issues (e.g. change of address, non-delivery of course information, financial matters etc.) need to be sent in writing by email to the administrator at info@ccst.co.uk (it is not enough simply to mention it to a tutor).
Please save our email address under your safe contacts (so that our emails don't go to your Spam folder)
Communications:
Once you have started the course, further communications such as course details and other course information will be sent primarily by email wherever this is practical. Please confirm on the Student Agreement (Section 2) whether you are happy to be contacted by this means or not.
Please also ensure that you keep us informed of any changes to your contact details.
Student Agreement:
Once you have settled into the training and have a clear impression of the nature of the training, you will be asked to sign the Student Agreement. The purpose of this is to ensure that students are familiar with all the course information and requirements. Please return the signed documents to confirm that you have read the information and that you agree to abide by the terms and conditions regarding the course, with respect to:
- attendance, home study, practice, teaching clinics, treatments, assessment procedures, conditions for progressing through the training, advertising, payment of fees, and any other course requirements outlined therein.
